Cartini Jazz Project

Tino van der Sman and others

A new project of Dutch flamenco guitarist Tino van der Sman, one of the few foreigners to have built a successful career in Spain. After graduating from the Rotterdam conservatorium in 1997 Timo has worked with the greatest names in flamenco: Israel Galván, Andrés Marin, Gerardo Núñez, Manolo Soler, Segundo Falcón, José Valéncia and Chicuelo. ‘Flamenco and jazz have a great deal in common,’ he writes. ‘They are connected by a similar origin and a freedom of movement in the music. In The Cartini Jazz Project flamenco guitar, double bass, singer and percussion search for a dialogue without losing sight of their backgrounds. Dutchman Toon de Gouw guest-appears on trumpet. Cartini does not search for or try to exceed boundaries: it strives to make them disappear.
